Lessons from Mikhail
In this film, Vladimir Vasiliev presents a training session based on the lessons learned from his teacher, colleague and close friend, the legendary founder of Systema, Mikhail Ryabko. The drills in this class are aimed to develop smoothness, control, variety and freedom of movements.
Vladimir answers some of the following questions:
- How was Mikhail teaching wrestling, strikes and other topics – as a whole or by some fundamental blocks and elements?
- Back to principle of non-destruction. How does that apply when you’re working with weapons?
- How was Mikhail preparing for the classes and seminars that he was about to teach?
A Chat Notes PDF file is included with the Lessons from Mikhail (downloadable). It features many questions about how Mikhail practiced Systema, prepared for seminars, and refined his techniques. Vladimir also shared insights into Mikhail’s fighting style and overall lifestyle. These notes are a great companion to the video, offering added context and deeper understanding as you follow along.

I always love hearing more about how Mikhail led his life and training.

The zoom seminar was a powerful and enlightening session. One of the most impactful moments for me was the segment exploring movement from the push-up position. This allowed me to discover unnoticed tension in my body and once again brought me back to the importance of breathing. Every small movement carried profound lessons. These Connected Seminars always provide insights on many levels—not only for training, but for living—and I carry those lessons with me into everyday life. I sincerely appreciate the effort and wisdom that went into this session—from the teachings to the filming, and the welcoming atmosphere created by all participants. I continue to pray for good health and happiness for everyone at Systema HQ Toronto, including all of the students.
