One particular advantage that Systema has is that it is essentially a practical self-defence system. In today’s society people are realising that it is all very well to practice kata with a friendly opponent in a dojo, but when faced with a raving drunk in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere, such experience may not be particularly useful.

I have studied Karate, Aikido, and currently study a style called Pugnare (to fight) which is a combination of Karate, Kung-Fu, Jiujitsu, Thai Boxing, and some elements of Indonesian Silat and Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee’s martial art). So as you can see, I’m not unfamiliar with martial arts, but I am not an expert either. However I feel I have an idea of what works and what doesn’t. I can see that Systema works.

Systema is a very complete self defence art. From what I have already seen and read, it seems that the art really does apply to modern times and situations. It makes more sense to learn empty hand plus knife, credit card, belt, etc. for self defence than to spend years learning a formal type of martial art that is lacking in techniques.
