by Vladimir Vasiliev
Work with the challenges of being restrained and overcome them with freedom and creativity.
In this two-part instructional film, Vladimir dives into the art of working through truly confining attacks – handcuffs, holds, grabs, belt, and zip-ties – transforming physical limitations into advantages.
Vladimir reveals how to identify the part of your body that instinctively reacts to danger, how to extend that reaction to your entire body and gain instant and fluid movement.
The training covers practical ways to keep efficiency while restrained, to use handcuffs as tools for defense and offense, to apply handcuffs as improvised brass knuckles and operate effectively when cuffed in front, behind your back, or even cuffed to another person.
Whether for self-defense, professional training, or personal growth, this unique film offers the insights into staying in control under extreme constraints, empowering you to adapt and act decisively regardless of the limitations.
No matter how restrained, learn to overcome the biggest limitation – your own tension.
Running time: 55 minutes.

This is a game-changer. As someone who trains regularly, I thought I had a solid grasp of how to handle restraints, but this film completed opened my eyes. Vladimir’s ability to break down how your body reacts under pressure and teach you to move beyond those natural limitations is truly remarkable. The techniques are not just practical but empowering, the training feels both effective and realistic. Watching this gave me a deeper appreciation for how these principles work in real life. It doesn’t just teach you how to overcome physical restraints—it challenges you to overcome the mental and emotional barriers of tension. Highly recommended!

I had the honour of attending this special training session and it was really exceptional. Vladimir demonstrated work I had not seen before. The way he manipulated the opponent with such ease and prowess showed the versatility one single handcuff can bring…. It was like watching a modern day Houdini. I particularly enjoyed when Vladimir combined multiple opponents using one or multiple handcuffs and then swiftly maneuvred out bodies in which ever way he desired, using just the right amount of pain to trigger our movement or to lock our bodies in place. Thank you so much, Master Vladimir Vasiliev, for sharing your professional wisdom.

When Handcuffs Become Weapons – Insights of a Correctional Officer
Mikhail Volman
I recently watched Handcuffs video by Vladimir Vasiliev. I was blown away by the versatility and depth of demonstration and the ease with which Vladimir finds small and at first unnoticed movement to change the game from being disadvantaged and limited by handcuffs to fully dominating and controlling the escorting person.
I’ll open a small secret, without being able to elaborate. I have been working in the correctional system for 15 years, 9 of which being on crisis intervention team. Dealing with dangerous offenders who are frequently handcuffed has been a norm and often uneventful daily routine.
Frequently, in this line of work, I had to apply handcuffs on rebellious and non-compliant offenders. And in most cases, after the handcuffs have been securely applied, the person comes down which can create an illusion that the situation is resolved. I have seen cases where officers became complacent once the offender is in handcuffs. It may give one a false sense of security.
Several years ago, we had a near hostage situation when the offender was handcuffed through the opening in the door (a hatch) and when the cell door opened for him to come out, he assaulted the officer from behind and was trying to choke him pulling him down to the ground having handcuffs deeply embedded into the officer’s throat. Luckily, this situation was quickly resolved with the officer receiving minor injuries and taking some time off.
But the reality of this happening to anyone of us at work has become very clear. We have incorporated a number of drills in our training that would eliminate any chance of that happening again, but the reality is we haven’t had anyone as determined as that individual was or anyone as skilled as Vladimir is.
I also looked at the Handcuffs video from the point of view of someone who has trained in Systema with Vladimir for over 24 years and instructed for almost 20 of them. It was an eye-opener by every standard.
I immensely enjoyed watching Vladimir apply the fundamental Systema principles in his work – having his hands bound together and still being fully relaxed, moving with ease and fully controlling his opponent. Vladimir shows how versatile and dangerous a handcuffed person can be if armed with the knowledge of Systema.
I strongly recommend this video to anyone whether working in law enforcement or anyone in general and thank Vladimir for sharing his knowledge and experience.
