It is a very good book! It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. There is so much in Systema to learn and develop that it can be confusing on how one’s time should be spend for the training on your own outside of class. Reading this book reminds me of Konstantin giving a lecture: a thorough command of the subject matter, well organized chapters with superbly detailed lessons, plus excellent stories which support each bit of information.Here you have it all: A Systema master, who also has psychology of combat degree, plus he is a master instructor–He really knows how to teach this stuff. I particularly like that he gives instructions of exercises, with some details left to individual interpretation, but with an excellent explanation of the rationale and benefits of that particular exercise.
This is a book that people will read over and over, now, and in the future, and they’ll probably find meaningful tips that can only be discovered as the readers mature in their understanding of the universe that is Systema. Along with the book “Let Every Breath…” and the instructional videos, this really becomes part of a learning library for Systema practitioners of all levels.

A few years ago I was taking a bus in Ames, Iowa and to make a long story short a bunch threatening, drunk guys were trying to turn a relatively peaceful night into a bus ride into hell. Without going into too much detail, it was when I was managing my fear, that Major Konstantin Komorov’s instruction about staying aware of the distances of the threats helped me keep myself safe in that moment. Anyone who has been in a real life street situation knows that you never win, you survive. With the Cold War now long over, I believe that the Western martial art and self-protection community can find a moment of world peace by respecting, learning, and applying the information that Valerie and Vladimir Vasiliev have made available. I particularly think that the products that include Major Komorov’s instructions on fear management to be invaluable. I can not recommend the quality of the education and training highly enough.

This book is missing two critical pieces for making it an essential read: illustrations and clear instructions. The book has lots of exercises, but there are no illustrations or pictures like the other books have that would clarify what the exercises are supposed to be like. For example, when working with a stick, what does it mean to “blend” with the direction of the stick, and how does that keep you from getting hit? The author often defers proper explanations and omits exercises by saying “there are already plenty of dvds and instructional materials on this topic”, which is not ideal when trying to learn Systema on a budget.
That being said, I like the training progression laid out in the book. In short its first breathing, then groundwork, then standing.

Great book, easy to read and understand, read it from start to finish as soon as I bought it. Loaned it to another person and haven’t gotten it back so I might just buy another one!
