By Stephen Dietrich, a Systema HQ Toronto instructor and student since 2014.
One of the key Systema skills is moving softly, yet with real power.
Through his many years of diligent training with Vladimir Vasiliev, Stephen was able to gain such skill and is now sharing it with you.
Enjoy this special, full class footage, where Stephen takes you through a great exercise progression. Study:
- Effortless movements from all core positions – push-ups, sit-ups, leg raises, and squats
- Moving lightly across the ground
- Super smooth falling
- Utilizing a stick for unique movement varieties
- Breathing to feel and move your body
- Movement as an internal massage
- How to gain the feeling of freedom and readiness to move
Don’t create movement. Allow it to happen.
Running time: 1hr 32 min.

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of taking part in Stephen Dietrich’s “Smooth and Powerful Movements” class, and it surpassed all my expectations! I’ve trained with Stephen for a while now and he is one of the more experienced Systema practitioners; his ability to control his body and his lack of tension is noticeable right from the first move he makes. The class was structured and paced very well. Stephen demonstrated that softness not only accommodates power, but actually encourages it, as tension in the body restricts or even impedes power. One of the best exercises we did is moving power like a wave from anywhere in the body into our hands or legs for a better strike or kick, even from our toes through the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow and into the fist. At the start of the class, we did a one minute static push-up pose for endurance and it was challenging; at the end of the class we did the same exercise with softness and power and it felt that much more effortless. Thank you, Stephen, for the class and hope to join your excellent classes in the future!

Steven introduced different concepts of breathing that where new to me. I learned about breathing to heal old injuries and about breathing through thoughts to get rid of them. I liked the progression in his class and how the perception of the body changed due to conscious breathing.

I found the class very interesting. Watching the assistants (6 people until the middle of the class and 7 at the end) move, I learned the importance of practicing to know myself. Stephen-sensei’s instruction helped me understand that everyone’s awareness and reactions are different, and that there is no need to compare ourselves to others to be superior or inferior. I realized that it is important to enhance our ability to notice ourselves through a variety of drills. I would like to thank the cameraman. The angle of the camera was very good and I could see the movements clearly. Thank you to Systema HQ Toronto team for always providing high quality classes.

After just taking the Smooth Movements class with Stephen over Zoom, I’m feeling better than I think I ever have. I’m very much looking forward to taking more live Zoom classes with him.

In this film Stephen gives great exercises for developing power. It’s a great set of exercises for solo training to build in your own training schedule.
